African American Read-In Is Here!

February is a month to celebrate African American history. During the month we also celebrate by engaging in the Twenty-First National African American Read-In. The goal of the read-in is to make African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities. It is a time when we celebrate literature by African-Americans, get acquainted with books we haven’t read, and share titles. It’s a once-a-year event that shouldn't be missed. Jefferson students will be participating in the Read-In. Parents are encouraged to participate as well, and to drop by the Jefferson Library for assistance in selecting books. Also, check out The Brown Bookshelf where a month-long series of interviews with creators of children's literature can be found.

Reading with Your Child

Your child may be reading simple text, but s/he can understand more complex stories too. The stories you share will challenge your child with ideas and vocabulary that will build comprehension skills. Also, remember that is is OK to read a favorite book over and over again.

Here are a few tips to remember when reading with your child:

1. Make sure that your child can see the pictures and text in the book that you are sharing.
2. Talk with your child about the title and illustrations. Ask if s/he can guess what the book is going to be about.

3. Stop occasionally and ask questions. You should note that these are questions which require your child to think and give opinions.

4. Encourage critical thinking by asking your child to make predictions about what will happen next.
5. When finished, ask your child which part of the story was his/her favorite.

Jefferson Elementary Did, and our top reading classes enjoyed some ice cream in the process too! Mrs. Hill's 5th Grade Class, Mrs. Rossi's 2nd Grade Class, and Ms. Thiele's 4th Grade Class. Yay for reading and ice cream is nice too!

Jefferson Elementary was recognized by the National Council of English Teachers (NCTE) along with hundreds of other schools across the nation for participating in the February 2009 African American Read In!

For the past five weeks, we at Jefferson have been reading the 2008-2009 CRYM nominees. They are Hilda Must be Dancing by Karma Wilson, Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding by Lenore Look , Bats at the Beach by Brian Lies, Stanley's Wild Ride by Linda Bailey, and The Perfect Nest by Catherine Friend.

After voting, the results show that Jefferson Elementary really really liked:

Read Across America Challenge 2009

Well sort of....

I used the idea of reading across American to engage students in a Reading Challenge! By reading a minimum of 15-20 mins. a day, Jefferson students can reach a combined school total of 60,000 minutes! So far Mrs. Hill's 5th grade class has read a over 14,000 minutes! way to go 5th graders :)

Both 4th Grade Classes together (Sean Keller and Beverley Thiele) read over 20,000 mins!!!!

Lisa Rossi's 2nd grade class read over 7,000 mins!
